QPR stands for Question, Persuade, Refer. It is an evidence-based suicide prevention training programme that teaches people how to recognise the warning signs of someone who may be considering suicide, engage them in a supportive conversation, and connect them with appropriate professional help. It is often described as the suicide prevention equivalent of CPR.
The three steps of QPR
- Question – Learn how to ask someone directly and compassionately if they are thinking about suicide.
- Persuade – Encourage the person to accept help and remain safe.
- Refer – Help connect them with appropriate mental health professionals, crisis services, or other supports.
